Rianna Mercer - Final Project

Project 3

Module 3

Finalizing my prototype of the heart rate sensor.

Workshop 1

For our body storming challenge, we were tasked with onboarding a new user to a complex service app. We chose a bank app. The first app feature was signing into the app, and the second was transferring money between accounts. We started by creating many screens that would allow the user to navigate through the app. For our first iteration, we realized we had way too many cardboard pieces. This made it really hard to hold all of them when running through the prototype. For our second iteration, we put information together into cardboard pieces to make it easier to hold. This is a GIF of us running through our second iteration.

Activity 1: My Research

For activity 1, I chose to prototype making the central heart beat up and down. I got a lot of feedback from project 2 saying to make the pages less static. Doing this would improve my project. I started by trying to figure out how to get the heart to move up and down. I reasoned that changing the scale of the image would be best. In this picture I was able to scale it up, but it wouldn't scale it back down. I explored using a chain trigger in ProtoPie. This didn't work and I honestly did not understand the 'mapping' at all. I learned about the timeline feature where I can start and repeat certain events. The scale down event starts immediately when the page is opened, and the scale up event starts 2 seconds after the page is opened. Repeating these infinitely creates a loop where the heart beats up and down. Final Activity 1.

Activity 2: My Research

For activity 2, I wanted to focus on refining my prototype. Instead of having one major obstacle to clear, I had multiple small ones. For example, in this picture I wanted to make it so that the text changes depending on what value the sensor reads. I learned that this would be impossible because in order to do this, I'd have to change the value of my variable to 'text,' but it needed to be set to 'number.' I also wanted to create a new screen that gives the user a calming space where they can relax and focus on their breathing. At the bottom of each page is a button the user can click to be brought to this page. I figured out how to get Protopie to play audio. When the page is opened, it immediately starts playing. I also wanted to make it so that Protopie keeps reading the heart rate data even when off the landing screen. This makes it so that if the user experiences some sort of change like a spike or a dip, the screen will change to the respective screen. Next, I needed to improve the design of this page since it was bland. This was the last thing I did for activity 2 to improve my prototype.

Additional Research or Workshops

Additional research I did on calm interfaces. Additional research I did on heart rate data. Additional research I did on animations.
